Season overview

The first season of the television series Lost in Space follows the Robinson family, an astronaut group accompanied by a pilot and a robot. In 1997, the family departs an overpopulated Earth aboard the spaceship Jupiter 2, intending to reach a planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri. The mission is compromised when Dr. Zachary Smith, an agent for an unnamed foreign government, sabotages the robot and slips onto the vessel. Smith’s presence and the resulting excess weight alter the ship's flight path, leading the craft into a massive meteor storm. To save himself, Smith prematurely revives the crew from suspended animation. Although the Jupiter 2 survives the storm, the damage caused by the robot's earlier sabotage leaves the crew lost in space. The ship eventually crash-lands on an alien world identified as Priplanus. The remainder of the season focuses on the crew's efforts to survive a variety of adventures on this planet. Throughout these events, Smith remains with the group, serving as a source of villainy and comedic cowardice while exploiting the forgiving nature of Professor John Robinson. The series is categorized as science fiction, fantasy, and comedy.
