Overview

Independence Day is a 1996 American science fiction action film directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. The film features an ensemble cast including Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Margaret Colin, Randy Quaid, and Robert Loggia. The story begins on July 2nd when worldwide communications systems experience chaos due to strange atmospheric interference. Initially mistaken for meteors, these phenomena are revealed to be gigantic spacecraft piloted by a mysterious alien species. As the skies ignite, terror spreads through major cities across the globe. It becomes clear that the extraterrestrial force intends to launch an attack with the goal of total annihilation over the Fourth of July weekend. On July 3rd, the aliens proceed to obliterate targets. The last hope to stop the destruction rests with an unlikely group of people united by fate and unimaginable circumstances as they face a force of incredible magnitude determined to invade and destroy Earth.
