Overview
In the Shadow of Women is a 2015 drama film co-written and directed by Philippe Garrel. The production features a cast that includes Clotilde Courau, Stanislas Merhar, Lena Paugam, and Vimala Pons. Known in French as L'Ombre des femmes, the movie serves as the second installment in a trilogy of love directed by Garrel, positioned between his 2013 film Jealousy and his 2017 film Lover for a Day. The story follows Pierre and Manon, a couple living in poverty who support themselves through odd jobs while producing documentaries with limited resources. The plot centers on the couple's relationship after Pierre meets a young intern named Elisabeth. Pierre begins an affair with Elisabeth but intends to maintain his relationship with Manon simultaneously, refusing to leave his partner for his mistress. The film held its world premiere as the opening selection for the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival on 14 May. It was subsequently released in France on 27 May 2015 by SBS Distribution.
