Overview

Hawaii Five-O is an American police procedural drama series that originally aired for twelve seasons between 1968 and 1980. Produced by CBS Productions and Leonard Freeman, the show is set in Hawaii and follows the investigations of an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police. This special state police task force is answerable only to the governor and is headed by Detective Lieutenant Steve McGarrett, portrayed by Jack Lord. The unit was based on an actual task force that existed under martial law in the 1940s. The series features additional cast members including James MacArthur, Kam Fong, and Herman Wedemeyer. The program is well known for its theme music, which was composed by Morton Stevens. Many episodes conclude with McGarrett instructing his subordinate to book them, Danno, occasionally specifying a charge such as murder. The series continues to be available in reruns.
