S3·E14 Wishin' and Hopin'
Synopsis
The race for the Chief's position is on, and the attending physicians, Derek, Burke, Addison and Mark, compete for Richard's affections by trying to help out everywhere possible. The Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic is open for business, but only one single patient shows up. Izzie is disappointed in what she invested Denny's legacy in, and tries to steal patients from the emergency room. Callie and George get back from Las Vegas, announcing their marriage, much to everyone's disbelief. Izzie is not supportive of their marriage and tries to get George to realize the mistake he has made. Meanwhile, Meredith's Alzheimer's-stricken mother, Ellis Grey, experiences a change in her medical condition by becoming lucid for the day. She is disappointed in the mediocrity her daughter has fallen into and begins to despise Derek, blaming him for what happened to the Meredith that used to be "a force of nature". Ellis has to have heart surgery and, despite her wishes, Meredith schedules her upcoming surgery. Richard talks to Ellis and realizes that she is still in love with him, but loses her memory after their talk ends, before Meredith has the chance to tell her how she really feels.

The episode opens with the ongoing contest for the chief’s position at Seattle Grace. Attending physicians Derek Shepherd, Preston Burke, Addison Montgomery and Mark Sloan each vie for Richard Webber’s favor, attempting to assist wherever possible in the hopes of securing his endorsement. Their rivalry underscores the hospital’s daily operations as they scramble to demonstrate leadership and competence.
The Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic finally begins seeing patients, but only a single individual arrives for care. Izzie Stevens, who has invested heavily in preserving Denny’s legacy through the clinic, feels let down by the low turnout. Determined to make the clinic viable, she attempts to draw patients away from the emergency department, hoping to increase the clinic’s visibility and utilization.
Meanwhile, Callie Torres and George O’Malley return from Las Vegas, where they have secretly married. Their announcement of the marriage shocks their colleagues, who react with disbelief at the sudden development. Izzie, unsupportive of the union, confronts George, urging him to recognize what she perceives as a mistake and to reconsider his decision.
In a parallel storyline, Meredith Grey’s mother, Ellis Grey, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, experiences an unexpected day of lucidity. During this brief period of clarity, Ellis expresses disappointment in what she views as Meredith’s mediocrity and directs her frustration toward Derek, blaming him for the changes she sees in her daughter. Ellis requires heart surgery, and despite her expressed wishes, Meredith arranges for the operation to proceed as scheduled.
Richard Webber meets with Ellis during her lucid interval and discovers that she still harbors love for him. Their conversation is cut short when Ellis’s memory
