Overview

False Memory is a Chinese animated television series released in 2026. The program is based on an indie short film of the same name that was originally produced in 2020. The narrative centers on a protagonist who struggles to cope with the death of his friend, Shi Yan. Unable to accept this loss, the lead character creates a manifestation of his friend within his own mind. This construct takes the form of a figure known as Bug Man, serving as a companion that the protagonist uses to retreat from the difficulties of his daily life. The existence of Bug Man is eventually identified by the Memory Management Bureau, which oversees the integrity of mental constructs. To resolve the situation, the bureau assigns two memory collectors named Fang Tang and Bai Zhong to locate and retrieve the entity. The series explores the intersection of grief and escapism as the collectors attempt to remove the manifestation from the protagonist’s memory.
