Overview

Evening Shade is an American television sitcom that aired on the CBS network from September 21, 1990, to May 23, 1994. The series explores the appeal of small-town life and centers on the character Wood Newton, played by Burt Reynolds. Newton is an ex-professional football player who returns to the rural town of Evening Shade, Arkansas, to coach a high school football team that has suffered from a long losing streak. Reynolds personally requested that his character be a former player for the Pittsburgh Steelers due to his own fandom of the team. For his performance in the series, Reynolds won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy. Each episode of the program concluded with a closing narration provided by Ossie Davis, who summarized the events of the story.
