Overview

Set in the year 2159, the film Elysium explores a future where humanity is divided into two distinct social classes. The wealthy population resides on a pristine, man-made space station also named Elysium, while the remainder of the human race inhabits an overpopulated and ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes serves as a hard-line government official dedicated to enforcing strict anti-immigration laws to protect the luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by those living on the space station. Despite these measures, many people from Earth continuously attempt to reach the station by any means necessary. The narrative centers on an individual named Max who finds himself in a desperate situation. Backed into a corner, Max agrees to undertake a daunting mission. The success of this task is portrayed as a potential turning point that could not only save his own life but also bring equality to the divided population. The film depicts the ongoing tension between the two classes and the extreme lengths individuals will go to in order to secure a better existence.
