District 9 2009

Overview

District 9 is a 2009 science fiction action film directed and co-written by Neill Blomkamp. The movie was adapted from Blomkamp's 2005 short film titled Alive in Joburg and features actors Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, David James, and Vanessa Haywood. The story begins thirty years after aliens arrive on Earth seeking refuge from their dying planet. These extraterrestrial beings, who are nicknamed prawns due to their appearance, are isolated in a South African area known as District 9. The facility is managed by Multi-National United, a company that prioritizes mastering the aliens' advanced technology over the welfare of the visitors. The plot follows a government field agent who contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA. As his physical transformation progresses, the agent finds himself banished to the alien ghetto, where he must hide to escape those who seek to exploit his condition. The film depicts the aliens as being found in a starving state within a spacecraft hovering over Johannesburg.
