Overview

Darker than Black is a Japanese anime television series created and directed by Tensai Okamura and animated by the studio Bones. The series, which premiered in 2007, consists of twenty-five episodes broadcast on MBS, TBS, and their affiliates. The story is set ten years after the appearance of a mysterious spatial anomaly known as Hell's Gate in Tokyo, which altered the sky and landscape. Following the earlier emergence of Heaven's Gate in South America, the real stars disappeared and were replaced by false stars. During this period, individuals possessing special abilities known as Contractors emerged, each capable of performing supernatural feats at the cost of their conscience. Following the Heaven's War, the United States lost its position as a global superpower to a mysterious organization called the Syndicate. The narrative focuses on a Chinese Contractor operating within this transformed world. The series is also known by its Japanese title, Darker Than Black: The Black Contractor.
