Overview

Cackling Kitarou is a television series that presents a version of the classic Gegege no Kitaro story. The narrative follows Kitaro, a boy who resides in the Gegege Forest and Cemetery, which are lands inhabited by many Yokai. Kitaro lives alongside several companions, including his father, who is mostly dead and survives only in his eye, as well as Sunakake Babaa, NekoMusume, and Konaki Jiji. While the series follows the traditional plot established in previous iterations of the franchise, it features a distinct visual variation. Unlike earlier portrayals of the character that featured grayish silver hair, this version of Kitaro is depicted with brown hair. The term cackling, which appears in the title, is defined in various dictionaries as the act of making a sharp, broken, or shrill noise characteristic of a hen, or as a way of laughing in a loud, harsh, and sometimes unpleasant manner. This series serves as another retelling of the established Kitaro tale within the Gegege no Kitaro series.
