Human remains are discovered inside the belly of a shark, leading to the involvement of Dr. Temperance Brennan and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, who are brought in to identify the missing person. Evidence recovered from the remains suggests that the victim had been the prey of several fish, which directs the team's ongoing investigation to the Aquarium of the Atlantic.

At the aquarium, the investigation focuses on a missing guest lecturer and notorious self-help guru who was known for preaching the healing power of the ocean. While working on the case, both Brennan and Booth navigate their own relationship dynamics when a marine biologist shows interest in Booth.
