Overview

Azumanga Daioh is a Japanese television anime series based on the four-panel comedy manga written and illustrated by Kiyohiko Azuma. The animation was produced by J.C.Staff and directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori. The series originally aired in Japan from April to September 2002. The story follows a ten-year-old child prodigy named Chiyo Mihama who faces challenges fitting in at high school with classmates who are five years her senior. These students include Osaka, who is described as dimwitted with a unique perspective, and Tomo, who is known for her volatile personality. The group also features Kagura, a competitive athlete, Yomi, who is characterized as a hothead, and Sakaki, who is timid and holds an unrequited love for animals. Together with their teacher, these characters navigate the experiences of high school life. The franchise also includes earlier productions such as the Azumanga Web Daioh from 2000 and the 2001 release titled Azumanga Daioh: The Very Very Short Movie. The original manga was serialized in the magazine Dengeki Daioh between 1999 and 2002.
