As the story begins near Christmas, Paula, a St. Louis antique appraiser, reluctantly accepts a marriage proposal from her career-focused attorney boyfriend, Daniel. Sensing that Paula has mixed emotions regarding the engagement, her Aunt Jane invites her to visit her home in Nantucket. During her stay, Paula plans a trip to the nearby island of Martha's Vineyard, where she meets a charming inn owner and develops romantic feelings for him.
