The television series 86 EIGHTY-SIX is an anime adaptation of a sci-fi light novel series. The series is produced by Aniplex and production is led by A-1 Pictures. It premiered on April 10 and is stylized as 86--EIGHTY-SIX or 86: EIGHTY-SIX. The series is set in a world where the Republic of San Magnolia has developed unmanned combat drones called Juggernaut in response to attacks by the autonomous unmanned drones of the neighboring Empire of Giad, known as the Legion. However, these drones are not truly unmanned, as they are piloted by individuals known as the Eighty-sixers, who are treated as less than human. The series follows the story of Shin, the captain of Spearhead Squadron, which is comprised of Eighty-sixers, as he fights a hopeless war on the battlefield. The series explores the themes of humanity and the treatment of the Eighty-sixers, who are stripped of their humanity and forced to pilot the Juggernauts into battle.
