The story follows Broadway director Julian Marsh, who needs just one more hit show so he can retire and recover his health. It appears he may succeed until temperamental star Dorthy Brock breaks her ankle on the eve of the show's premiere, requiring her to be replaced by her understudy, Peggy. Set during the Depression and about the Depression, this classic backstage movie musical changed the film musical forever and saved Warner Bros. studios from bankruptcy, helping it grow into a major studio.
