Biography

Youssef Chahine was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1926. He studied at a friars' school and later at Victoria College until he obtained his High School Certificate. Chahine then attended the University of Alexandria for one year before moving to the U.S. where he spent two years at the Pasadena Play House, taking courses on film and dramatic arts. Upon returning to Egypt, cinematographer Alevise Orfanelli helped him enter the film industry. Chahine's film debut was Baba Amin in 1950, and he was first invited to the Cannes Film Festival with Son of the Nile in 1951. He won a Golden Tanit at the Carthage Festival in 1970 and directed the first Egypt-Algeria co-production, Le moineau, in 1973.
