Biography
Yoko Shimada was a Japanese actress, best known to Western audiences for her portrayal of Mariko in the 1980 miniseries Shogun. She won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV-Series - Drama category and was nominated for a Prime-time Emmy Award for her work on the serial in 1981. Born in Kumamoto City, Shimada began learning ballet at age three and later became an actress, obtaining an agent and beginning her acting career. She is also known for introducing Japanese history and culture to foreign audiences through her role in Shogun.
