His early career included a role in a 1976 television adaptation of the Peter Prince novel Playthings, which was directed by Stephen Frears. He also appeared in several episodes of Play For Today, including Victims of Apartheid in 1978, Barrie Keeffe's Waterloo Sunset in 1979, and The Vanishing Army in 1980. In 1978, Laird became a founder member of the Black Theatre Co-operative, now known as NitroBeat, and performed in its inaugural play, Welcome Home Jacko by Mustapha Matura, the following year. He subsequently secured a breakthrough role in the 1979 film Quadrophenia, portraying Ferdy, a drug supplier.
