Career overview
Selleck’s breakthrough came with the lead role of Thomas Magnum, a private investigator based in Hawaii, on the CBS series Magnum, P.I., which aired throughout the 1980s. The character’s charismatic blend of humor and toughness made the show a ratings success and established Selleck as a household name in American television. Following Magnum, Selleck continued to anchor television projects, notably portraying detective Jesse Stone in a series of made‑for‑TV movies adapted from Robert B. Parker’s novels. In 2010 he joined the CBS lineup as Commissioner Frank Reagan, the central figure of the police drama Blue Bloods, a role he has sustained for many seasons. He also delivered memorable guest performances, including Dr. Richard Burke on Friends and A.J. Cooper on Las Vegas. Beyond the small screen, Selleck has built a substantial film résumé, appearing in more than fifty theatrical and television movies. His film credits include the sports comedy Mr. Baseball, the western adventure Quigley Down Under, and the crime thriller Lassiter. In addition to acting, he has worked as a film producer, contributing to the breadth of his career in both television and cinema.
