Most of his film work is in the horror genre, though he also ventured into science fiction. Gordon was a fan of H. P. Lovecraft and adapted several of Lovecraft's stories for the screen. His adaptations include the films Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, which was adapted from The Outsider, and Dagon, as well as the television episode Dreams in the Witch-House from the series Masters of Horror. He collaborated with fellow filmmaker Brian Yuzna. His career encompassed known directing credits on numerous projects within the industry.
