Biography

Steven Frederic Seagal is an American actor, producer, screenwriter, martial artist, and musician born on April 10, 1952, in Lansing, Michigan. A 7th-dan black belt and shihan in Aikikai aikido, Seagal began his adult life as a martial arts instructor in Japan, where he became the first foreigner to operate an Aikido dojo. He made his film debut in 1988 with Above the Law. Seagal gained prominence for his starring roles in action films such as Hard to Kill and Under Siege, the latter featuring his performance as Navy SEALs counter-terrorist expert Casey Ryback. He also directed and starred in the 1994 film On Deadly Ground. Beyond his film career, Seagal has served as a reserve deputy sheriff.
