When she was eleven years old, her grandmother sent her to acting classes, which led to her receiving a part in the 2000 film Liam. For her performance in Liam, she won the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival. Following this, director Danny Boyle cast her as Hannah, one of the survivors of a deadly epidemic, in his film 28 Days Later. She was also cast in the film In2ruders, directed by Naeem Mahmood, which additionally starred Tony Hadley and Caprice Bourret. Outside of her acting career, Burns has worked as a singer under the name Betty Curse, releasing a double A-side single titled M.
