Mark Rydell is an American actor, film director, and producer who was born in New York City on March 23, 1929. His initial training was in music, and as a youth he wanted to be a conductor. He also trained in acting and dramaturgy at the Juilliard School, the Neighborhood Playhouse School, and the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg. Rydell began his career as an actor, becoming known for his television roles as Walt Johnson on The Edge of Night and as Jeff Baker on As the World Turns. As a filmmaker, he has directed numerous Academy Award-nominated films, including The Fox, The Reivers, Cinderella Liberty, The Rose, The River, and For the Boys, and he received a nomination for Best Director for On Golden Pond.
