Career overview

Mabel Normand was an American silent film comedienne and actress who rose to prominence as a popular star of Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios. Noted as one of the film industry's first female screenwriters, producers, and directors, Normand appeared in hundreds of films during her career. At the height of her success in the late nineteenth-teens and early 1920s, she had her own movie studio and production company.

Onscreen, Normand appeared in a dozen commercially successful films with Charles Chaplin and seventeen with Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle. She occasionally wrote and directed movies featuring Chaplin as her leading man, and sometimes co-wrote and co-directed with Chaplin in films in which they played the lead roles. Along with her work alongside Chaplin, Normand formed part of a fixed cast in the slapstick films of Keystone, for which she also partially wrote the screenplays and directed.

Normand's notable film work includes appearances in such titles as Should Men Walk Home, Raggedy Rose, and Chaplin honí dolary. Recognized as one of the greatest comedians of the silent era, she was known for her gaiety and spontaneous spirit throughout her career in the film industry.
