Lyle S. Bettger, whose full name was Lyle Stathem Bettger, was an American character actor born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 13, 1915, and he passed away on September 24, 2003 at the age of 88. He was known primarily for his Hollywood roles in films and television from the 1950s onward, during which he typically portrayed villains. Among his notable appearances, he portrayed the wrathfully jealous elephant handler Klaus in the Oscar-winning film The Greatest Show on Earth in 1952. He was the son of Frank Bettger, who played as an infielder for the St. Louis Cardinals. Lyle Bettger left school in his late teens with the ambition of becoming an actor and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, eventually making his theatrical debut in Brother Rat.
