Biography
Louise Beavers was an American film and television actress born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 8, 1902. Active from the 1920s until 1960, she appeared in dozens of films and two hit television shows. Throughout her career, she was most often cast in roles as a maid, servant, or slave. Beavers became a breakthrough actress for black women and was recognized as a symbol of the mammy archetype, which portrays a black domestic servant as a good-natured, often overweight, and loud character. She was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, one of the four African-American sororities. Louise Beavers died on October 26, 1962.
