Lee Strasberg was born Israel Strassberg on November 17, 1901, in Budzanów, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was an American actor, director, and acting coach who immigrated to the United States in 1909. He co-founded the Group Theatre in 1931 with directors Harold Clurman and Cheryl Crawford, remaining with the group until 1937. In 1951, he became director of the Actors Studio in New York City. Later, in 1969, he founded the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City and in Hollywood. Recognized as a key theatrical figure and the father of method acting in America, his career spanned from the 1920s until his death on February 17, 1982, at the age of 80. His film credits include The Godfather Part II, The Longest Day, and The Godfather: A Novel for Television.
