He spent his early years with his mother in Charleston before moving to Dallas, Texas, to live with his father after his parents divorced. In 1991, at age fifteen or sixteen, he won the first Young and Modern Man Contest. Soon after, he moved to Los Angeles with his mother and began his acting career at age eighteen with a television guest appearance on Party of Five in 1994. His feature film debut came in 1995 with Bye Bye Love. Later that same year, he played the role of A.J. in the film Empire Records, which eventually became a cult classic.
