He is best known for playing the character Jeff Colby in the prime-time soap opera Dynasty, appearing from the first episode, Oil, in 1981 through the final episode, Catch 22, in 1989. He also played the same role in the spin-off series The Colbys between 1985 and 1987, and in the 1991 television movie Dynasty: The Reunion. Additionally, James is a veteran of daytime soaps, having first appeared in Search for Tomorrow in the late 1970s. For his work in Dynasty, he received a Golden Globe Award nomination in 1985.
