Joanne Samuel was born in 1957 in Camperdown, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She entered the Australian television landscape at the age of sixteen, making her screen debut in 1973 with an appearance in the ABC series Certain Women. Early in her career she secured guest roles in the police‑procedural dramas Matlock Police and Homicide, establishing a foothold in the genre.

Samuel subsequently became a regular cast member in several Australian soap operas. She appeared in Class of ’74, followed by a stint on The Sullivans, and later joined the long‑running medical drama The Young Doctors. Her tenure on The Young Doctors ended abruptly when the producers wrote her out to allow her to take a film opportunity; she was offered the part of the screen wife of Mel Gibson in the 1979 feature Mad Max after a fellow actress fell ill. The Mad Max role remains her most widely recognised screen credit.

After the success of Mad Max, Samuel returned to television, taking on the regular role of Kelly Morgan‑Young. Throughout her career she has been noted for her work across both television and film, with a body of work that includes early guest appearances, regular soap opera roles, and a memorable part in an internationally known action film.
