A former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company who began his career as a stage actor, he was best known for portraying main antagonists in the Mad Max franchise, playing Toecutter in the 1979 film Mad Max and Immortan Joe in the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road. His other screen work included playing Toad in the 1974 biker film Stone and Grunchlk on the science fiction television series Farscape.
