Ishirō Honda
Biography
Ishirō Honda was a Japanese film director born in Yamagata Prefecture in May 1911 and died on 28 February 1993. Early in his career he worked as an assistant to director Akira Kurosawa. During World War II he was drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army, served in China and was held as a prisoner of war when the conflict ended. He is sometimes miscredited in foreign releases as “Inoshiro Honda.” Honda directed the 1960 science‑fiction film The Human Vapor, a work that later inspired a modern series, and he was one of the creators of the original Godzilla, collaborating with special‑effects master Eiji Tsuburaya.
