Helen Horton (1923–2007) was an American actress born in Chicago, Illinois. After studying at Northwestern University, where she performed as Viola in a production of Twelfth Night alongside Patricia Neal, she pursued a brief stage career in New York before marrying Hamish Thomson and relocating near London. Horton worked extensively in British television, radio and theatre and is noted for providing the voice of the ship’s computer, “Mother,” in the 1979 film Alien. She was the mother of three children; her granddaughter is English actress Lily James. Horton died on 28 September 2007 at the age of eighty‑four.
