Guich Koock, born on July 22, 1944, in Austin, Texas, is a sixth-generation Texan who was raised on a ranch outside Austin. He attended Texas A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and working on a Master of Arts in Texas folklore by collecting stories from children of slaves. His various jobs after school included small acting parts, school headmaster, and restaurant manager. Alongside his friend Russell Hondo Crouch and Crouch's wife, Koock bought the town of Luckenbach, Texas, in 1971, which was first established as an Indian trading post in 1849 by German immigrant Albert Luckenbach. In Luckenbach, Koock organized the great Luckenbach World's Fair and the Luckenbach women's chili cookoff. He was subsequently spotted by casting director Sherry Rhodes, who cast him in director Steven Spielberg's first movie.
