He is best known for his Heimat trilogy, which includes the works Heimat - Eine deutsche Chronik, Heimat II: A Chronicle of a Generation, and Die andere Heimat - Chronik einer Sehnsucht. During his school years at the Herzog-Johann-Gymnasium in Simmern, guided by his German teacher Karl Windhäuser, Reitz began acting and staging plays.
