Douglas Reith is a British actor and teacher born on 16 July 1953 in Melton, Suffolk, England. He trained for the stage at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art before beginning his professional career in the late 1970s. His screen debut came with a role in the 1978 film International Velvet, in which he appeared alongside Tatum O'Neal and Christopher Plummer. After several years in acting, Reith spent five years as an announcer and presenter for BBC Radio 3. In 1989 he left the broadcaster to pursue a four‑year study of Classics, known as Greats, at Christ Church, Oxford. Following his university studies he worked as a teacher, including a position at Westminster School, before returning to acting.

Reith’s most widely recognised television work is his portrayal of Lord Merton in the period drama Downton Abbey, a role he inhabited from the series’ inception in 2010 through its conclusion in 2015. He also reprised the character in the two feature‑film continuations of the series. Across his career he has accumulated a total of thirty‑three credited acting appearances, encompassing both film and television work.
