Biography

Billy Dennis Weaver was an American actor and president of the Screen Actors Guild. Born in Joplin, Missouri, on June 4, 1924, he maintained a career in television and film from the early 1950s until 2006. He is best known for his portrayal of Chester Goode, the deputy to Marshal Matt Dillon on the western series Gunsmoke, and for his role as Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud on the police drama McCloud. His film credits include the 1958 Orson Welles production Touch of Evil, where he played a motel attendant. In 1971, Weaver starred in Duel, which served as the first film directed by Steven Spielberg. Weaver died on February 24, 2006.
