David Arugete, known professionally as Darío Moreno, was a Turkish-Jewish polyglot singer, composer, lyricist, and guitarist. Born in Smyrna in the Ottoman Empire, which is now Izmir, Turkey, on April 3, 1921, he was part of a large Jewish family. He was orphaned in early childhood after his father, a train station worker in Aydın, was shot dead under tragic circumstances. He was subsequently placed in the Sephardic orphanage of Izmir, known as Nido De Guerfanos, where he remained until he was four years old. Moreno achieved fame and built a notable career centered in France during the 1950s and 1960s, which included film work in France and other European countries. He became famous for his 1961 song Brigitte Bardot. Moreno died on December 1, 1968, at the age of 47.
