Curtis Lee Hanson was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer born in Reno, Nevada, on March 24, 1945. He grew up in Los Angeles and dropped out of high school, subsequently working as a photographer and editor for Cinema magazine. In the 1970s, he wrote for the horror film The Dunwich Horror in 1970 and made his directorial debut with the B-movie Sweet Kill in 1973, during which he lacked creative control. Hanson rose to prominence through screenwriting critically acclaimed films including The Silent Partner in 1978, White Dog in 1982, and Never Cry Wolf in 1983. He passed away on September 20, 2016.
