He was the son of Teresa and Francesco Scorsese, who were Sicilian immigrants from Polizzi Generosa near Palermo. He attended Public School 21 and married Catherine Cappa in 1933. He was the father of filmmaker Martin Scorsese. His film appearances included a still newspaper photograph in the 1976 film Taxi Driver, playing Charlie in the 1980 film Raging Bull, and portraying Vinnie in the 1990 film Goodfellas. He passed away on August 23, 1993, at the age of 80.
