Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha was born on 9 February 1909 in Marco de Canaveses, Portugal, and later became known professionally as Carmen Miranda. She emerged as a singer, dancer and actress who achieved fame in Brazil and the United States during the 1930s. Her public image in America was defined by the “lady in the tutti‑frutti hat,” a nickname derived from the fruit‑laden headdresses that became her signature look. Miranda’s acting work is recorded in fifty‑five credited performances, reflecting a substantial presence in film and television.

In 1939 the Broadway producer Lee Shubert, having seen her perform at Rio de Janeiro’s Cassino da Urca, offered Miranda an eight‑week contract to appear in the production The Streets of Paris. This engagement marked her transition to the American stage and helped to cement her reputation as an international entertainer. Recognised for her cross‑cultural impact, she became the first South American to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Miranda continued to work in the United States until her death in Beverly Hills on 5 August 1955, at the age of 46. Her career remains noted for its blend of musical performance and acting, and for the iconic visual style that linked her name forever with popular entertainment of the era.
