Byron Conrad Haskin was an American film and television director, special effects creator, and cinematographer who was born in Portland, Oregon on April 22, 1899, and died on April 16, 1984. Best known for his work in the adventure and science-fiction genres, he is remembered for directing the 1953 film The War of the Worlds, one of many films where he teamed with producer George Pal. His early career included working as a special effects artist with credits on Warner Bros. films, which served as an asset when he directed the killer ants film The Naked Jungle and the science fiction film Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Haskin also worked as a producer and directed television, including six episodes of the original The Outer Limits.
