Alan John Clarke was an English television and film director, producer, and writer born on October 28, 1935, in Wallasey, Merseyside, England, and he died on July 24, 1990, at the age of 54. Clarke primarily worked for television rather than cinema, writing and directing plays for Rediffusion, LWT, and the BBC, including work for play strands such as The Wednesday Play and Play for Today. In film, he made only three features, the best known being the 1979 youth prison drama Scum, which was an expansion of a Play for Today production. His other film works include Made in Britain, The Firm, Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Elephant, and The Gold Robbers.
