Africanews launched on April 20, 2016 as a sister channel of Euronews, with its newsroom in Pointe-Noire, in the Republic of the Congo. It produces two services, one in English and one in French, and this page carries the French one.
The idea behind the channel is to report on the whole continent from inside it, without centering the coverage on one country. A typical day covers elections and political transitions, economic stories such as currency moves, commodities and infrastructure projects, and security and humanitarian situations in conflict areas. Sport and culture have a regular place too, from the Africa Cup of Nations to music and film.
French-speaking viewers in West and Central Africa, the Maghreb and Europe will find the French service useful for following stories that francophone outlets based in Paris often cover less closely.
Africa spans several time zones, from UTC−1 in Cabo Verde to UTC+4 in Mauritius, so "live" can mean very different local times depending on where a story is happening.
