Mahalo for the time away for Bobby and me following Holy Week and Easter. We had a terrific time visiting family in Florida, Texas, and California. A highlight was getting to hold our newest grandchild, 2-month-old little Glen. It wasn’t long in our visit before Glen and I were sacked out on the couch. The joys of being a grandpa.
This Sunday is one of my favorites of the year. Often called “Good Shepherd Sunday”, drawn from the rich imagery in our assigned Gospel reading from the 10th chapter of John and the beloved words of Psalm 23. Interestingly, the portion of the Gospel we’ll hear read in worship doesn’t include the phrase “good shepherd” directly—but it does offer a powerful picture of the shepherd’s role through the relationship of listening: “The sheep follow the shepherd because they know his voice.”
In these Easter weeks, we’ve read about how the early disciples saw the risen Jesus. This Sunday, the focus shifts to hearing—to recognizing the voice of the one who calls us by name.
Here in Hawaiʻi, we don’t have to look far to imagine green pastures and rolling hills like those in Waimea. And just as the land nurtures life, so too does this spiritual gathering—a place where each person is known, named, and called by the Good Shepherd.
I deeply appreciate the time away. But it so good to come home of this amazing parish ‘ohana that is so clearly grounded in grace, love, and abundant life.
A reminder that there is NO beach mass, as it is the Kawaihae Long distance race. Pray for all of us racing the 10-mile course!
Blessings to our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers at the election of Pope Leo XIV.
Lastly, take a look below at the big news regarding the Gathering Place project.
With every blessing,
David
