Wild Balkans is a documentary film released on May 19, 2009, with a runtime of 53 minutes. The film was directed by Michael Schlamberger. The documentary explores the landscape of the Balkans, where wild animals live that have largely vanished from the rest of Europe. In this region, wolves hunt their prey in valleys between high-ranging dunes, while bears and lynxes wander through dense primeval forests. Big lakes in the area serve as a magnet for hundreds of bird species. The mountains of Montenegro harbor one of Europe's last primeval forests featuring trees over four hundred years of age. In the difficultly accessible hinterland, the Tara National Park contains the Tara gorge, which is thirteen hundred meters deep and represents the deepest gorge in the Karst Mountains. Additionally, nearby Lake Skadar serves as a home for two hundred and seventy species of birds.
