Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale - Part 1: The Sun Flag is a 2011 Taiwanese historical drama film written and directed by Wei Te-sheng and produced by John Woo. The film was released in Taiwan on September 9, 2011, with a runtime of two hours and twenty-four minutes. It is part one of the two-part, four-hour Taiwanese edition of the film Warriors of the Rainbow, and is based on the 1930 Musha Incident in central Taiwan. The story features an indigenous clan-based people living in harmony with nature whose way of life is threatened when violent interlopers from another culture arrive, intent on seizing their natural resources and enslaving them. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan, the aboriginal Seediq were forced to lose their own culture and give up their faith, with men subjected to harsh labor and kept from traditional hunting, while women had to serve Japanese policemen and their families by doing household work and giving up traditional weaving. A man rises up to lead his people in a brave and risky movement.
