The story follows a group of ordinary men from modern-day Japan known as the Four Cardinal Heroes, who are summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to act as its saviors. Melromarc is a country that has been repeatedly ravaged by the Waves of Catastrophe for centuries, bringing disaster to its citizens. To vanquish these waves, the four heroes are bestowed a sword, a spear, a bow, and a shield.
Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku described as an ordinary man, is cursed with the fate of being the Shield Hero. Armed with only a measly shield, Naofumi faces ridicule and belittlement from his fellow heroes and the people of the kingdom because of his weak offensive capabilities and lackluster personality. As the destructive Waves approach, Naofumi and Raphtalia must fight for the survival of the kingdom and work to protect the people of Melromarc from their ill-fated future.
