The Real World is the inaugural season of the MTV reality television series created by producers Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray. The program focuses on a group of diverse strangers living together for several months while cameras document their lives and interpersonal relationships. The first season featured a cast of seven individuals who were each paid 2,600 dollars to appear on the series. Production took place in a SoHo loft where the cast lived from February 16 to May 18, 1992. The series premiered on May 21, 1992. This production marked the first of three seasons of the franchise to be filmed in New York City. The show later returned to the city for its eleventh season, titled The Real World: Back to New York, in 2001. Additionally, the series set its twenty-first season, The Real World: Brooklyn, in the borough of Brooklyn in 2008. The Real World established the format of placing strangers in a different city each season to be filmed by production crews.
